On Friday at Byrd Elementary, our students honored the 25th anniversary of 9/11 through meaningful stories, community connection, and a lasting tribute. After reading "This Very Tree"—a story of resilience and hope—students planted their own survivor tree on school grounds to honor the lives lost.
A special thank you to Goochland County Fire-Rescue for visiting, sharing their wisdom, and showing our students what true community service looks like. Heroism lives right here in Goochland ❤️💙🇺🇸
Our 4th graders had a BLAST building and deploying rockets with Cayla Walker, 4-H Extension Agent! Student learning really took off during this activity 😎🚀

We were honored to welcome Lisa Brown and members of Goochland County Fire-Rescue to BES! Thank you for spending time with our students and helping us recognize the important role first responders play in our community—both on September 11 and every day. ❤️🤍💙
🇺🇸 Together We Remember 🇺🇸
BES students and staff came together to recognize September 11th - Patriot Day! Throughout the week, classes read This Very Tree: A Story of 9/11, Resilience, and Regrowth by Sean Rubin and learned about the Survivor Tree as a symbol of hope, strength, and new beginnings.
On Friday during ENCORE, each grade level gathered for a brief ceremony to help plant a “Survivor Tree” at BES.
We are proud of the respect and thoughtfulness our students demonstrated as we honored those September 11th, remembered the heroes and helpers, and reflected on the importance of resilience, unity, and hope. ❤️🤍💙
⏳ History came to life at Byrd Elementary today! 📜✨
Our 4th graders kicked off the "Time Travel in Goochland" project—an incredible initiative funded by the Goochland Education Foundation that unites fourth grade scholars across all three of our elementary schools to explore our shared local heritage.
Students dove into a hands-on gallery walk, examined historical artifacts, and learned directly from our wonderful community partners: Goochland Historical Society volunteer Mike Wilson and local volunteers from the historic Second Union Rosenwald School!
Projects like this strengthen our sense of community and connection by showing our young learners how we all fit into Goochland’s rich story. 🏛📜✨

Ms. Schiebel's fourth graders recently turned their classroom into an engineering lab to put the scientific method into practice. Working together, students designed and built custom cardboard ramps to test their hypotheses, identifying research questions, independent and dependent variables, and key controls along the way.
Hands-on, collaborative projects like this remind us how exciting learning can be when our students solve problems together! 🧮💡

Today we opened our doors for our preschool, kindergarten, 6th grade, and 9th grade students, and the excitement in our halls was contagious! From our youngest scholars stepping into classrooms for the very first time to our middle and high schoolers stepping into major new milestones, our dedicated staff were on hand with warm smiles and enthusiastic welcomes to kick off the new year.
Starting a new transition year takes courage and curiosity, and we couldn't be prouder of how our students showed up today ready to learn, connect, and grow together. 👏
